Alicante Local Information
Alicante City
Alicante is a historic port town situated on the east coast of Spain (Costa Blanca), it is the second largest city in the province of Valencia (after the city of Valencia).
The city is dominated by the Castillo de Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara Castle) which has fantastic views over the rooftops of the city, the marina and the beach of “Postiguet”. Reaching to the castle is easy, there is an elevator inside the castle rock which is open most of the year, alternatively you can walk through the narrow streets of the Barrio de la Santa Cruz with it’s petite colourful houses.
Alicante town itself is relatively small and easy to get around, the main points of interest (the old town, marina, beach) are all within easy walking distance. There are many cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from, and with the great climate all year round most places have seating areas outside “Terrazas” where you can enjoy a fine Paella.
Teatro Principal Alicante (Main Theatre)
Opened in 1847, the Alicante Main Theatre (Teatro Principal) is the main cultural venue of the city.
The Teatro Principal regularly hosts performing arts including ballet, opera and theatre performed by internationally acclaimed artists.
The building itself is a neo-classical design with an impressive entrance of 6 grand Doric columns located close to the old town.
Playa Postiguet (Postiguet Beach)
Postiguet Beach is located within walking distance of the centre of town which makes it attractive to locals and tourists alike. Behind the beach is a tiled promenade with a couple of restaurants and bars. In the summertime a special wooden beach bar is erected (known as a “Chiriguito”) perfect for relaxing and drinking a cocktail under the setting sun.
The beach has lifeguards and safe swimming zones in the summer making it ideal for families with young kids. If beach sports are your thing, there is a beach volleyball court, a beach football pitch and some fitness machines.
