My first serious encounter with a lottery ticket was at a kids party, after picking my daughter I was sold a lottery ticket to fund a Moros and Cristianos party, at a cost of 23 euros!! I found it outrageous that I was offered a ticket at a kids party and for 23 euros!, not wanting to be the odd one out, I paid. later I spoke to one of the mums, asking if this was normal? Was this the right price? Why should I fund a Moros and Cristianos party? Should the lottery be about funding people in need? To my surprise this mum’s answer was: “yes, I bought two tickets, its very good, the parties in that village are good”!....so it was normal? Maybe here 23 euros is nothing? Am I missing something? She just gave away 46 euros! For a party that she may no go!

So I started to investigate and went around asking my expats friends what did they think about it? Darcy said to me “Yes, my Spanish mother-in law spend about 500 euros in tickets every Christmas”, Maria said “Yes, my husband gets tickets from work, the company give them for free, about 50 euros" Karen “Yes, in my school all parent in the class get together and pay to buy a Gordo, The Fat One”; Ana “Yes we get them from our local pub, last year they make money”; Candela “ My mother likes to buy them in this place in Madrid, because it’s tradition, this kiosk has sold the winner a few times” and Carol “Yes the football team is also selling them” and it went on and on….

So the idea is this: an organisation buys the tickets from authaAs my years in Spain go by, I have come to the realisation of how little I knew of the Spanish culture, why do they celebrate so many parties, why family union is so important and why do they value their property so much….I learned that more than money for them was all about emotions, emotions based on culture, faith and eager to have fun! No wonder why Spain is in general a happy country, with strong traditions and rules but happy!. The more I get to live with them the more meaning I find to their traditions and this is why our Christmas blog will be dedicated to EL GORDO, which is the biggest lottery prize in the whole world!

So the idea is this: an organisation buys the tickets from authorised outlets for 20 euros, and sells them for 23 euros, the difference goes to the organisation to fund the charity, football team, party etc., people get in syndicates to buy the tickets and spread the possibilities of earning while funding some other interest.

The Lottery Christmas is a Christmas ritual celebrated on the 22 December every year, and comes from the XVIII century, the second longest running in the world, it went through the civil war, under Franco regime. The numbers are shuffled and presented by kids from the School of San Ildefonso, one of the oldest schools for Orphans in Spain, about 400 years old, In recent years it has been open for kids with families too. The children are chosen for their vocal skills and are prepared during the whole year for this event. There is pressure on a child and the same time honour on a child to sing the number, and Gosh ..they Sign the numbers, like angels in a glorious day. They are also known as The Children of Good Luck. Winners always donate money to this well deserved school.

The Angels singing the numbers
As the years have gone by the National Lottery has become an important event worldwide, the event is like watching a championship in Spain, entire villages join to win el GORDO, football teams, hospitals, restaurants etc. and the price is so big that pretty much you hear always one close to you have won. So imagine the emotions building up for this date!. As social media grows also the publicity, the commercials are beautiful made, and this year it has made the actors, who were no known until now, celebrities! watch the video:

It's late September here in Alicante and the restaurant terraces are still bustling with people in shorts and t-shirts enjoying a sangria and tapas in the shade, and families continue to flock to the beach for the late summer sun on the not so overcrowded beaches. The gorgeous mediterranean sea is around 25 degrees, perfect for swimming!

Most people think of summer as July and August, however the best time to visit the Costa Blanca is September/October or May/June where temperatures are still in the high 20's to low 30's and the atmosphere is still one of summer. Not only are September and October the best months in terms of the weather, the price of flights and holiday apartments/hotels are much more affordable!

We set them on an assignement to El Campello to capture properties and to find out more information about the city and report back with their findings...

On Friday MIA Property Boutique invited us to visit the famous and beautiful town of El Campello. A city that’s only 20 minutes from Alicante, situated in the riviera of the Costa Blanca. We took the TRAM line number 3 at 10:20 and arrived in El Campello at 10:40 in the morning. Trams leave every 10 minutes, it’s very fast, clean and cheap. This area is situated 13 km north of Alicante, and isn’t far from Alicante Airport. On arriving there we went to the tourist office on Avenida San Bartholomé. MIA asked us to go there to find maps for our international clients, however they were not able to give us any. Our next task was to go to find and photograph apartments and houses for sale or rent in the area. So we started our investigation from Avenida San Bartolemé and walked around the town centre. We observed that there are many more apartments than houses in this area. We found 5 apartments for sale. The first located in Carrer Ruperto Chapi, the second: Carrer de Gabriel Miró, the third we didn’t find the name of the street! The fourth located in Avinguda de la Generalitat, the fifth was in Carrer Joan Baptista Basset i Ramos. All these properties are situated near Muchavista beach.

The area has a certain charm thanks to the very traditional apartments, typical Spanish. Also, thanks to the TRAM number 3 it has great access to the beach of San Juan, very nice to enjoy the sun! It is possible to enjoy the sun as much as you want!

For entertainment you will find different local events such as the party of the Virgin Carmen on 16 June and also the Moors and Christians festival from 11th to 15th october which celebrates the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. During these festivals there are different stages known as “las entradas”, “los desfiles”, “las embajadas” and “la procesión”. This area is full of cafes and restaurants and small local bakeries to cover all your hunger needs.
https://youtu.be/Ill9p7VrYlk

For those people who enjoy walking, the the hiking route “Les Puntes de Gonslaves” allows you to discover the beautiful countryside. If you are a nature lover or simply enjoy relaxing, the central park is a peaceful place at the edge of the city. However, for those of you who like to enjoy more adventure, you can go on a walking excursion in the mountains where you will find the famous Canalobre Caves.

The crystal clear Mediterranean waters are perfect if you enjoy aquatic sports like scuba diving, snorkeling, padel board, windsurfing etc. Boat excursions are also possible.

El Campello is home to the French School (Lyceo Frances).

Coming to live in El Campello is a great option if you prefer to live outwith city life, nevertheless Alicante City is very easy to get to without having to own a car. Public transport is very good, with the bus line 21 taking you between Alicante - San Juan beach - El Campello and the TRAM line 3 joining the same locations.

“I knew it was going to be Thai Food and thought of tasting just some asian nibles….. little did I knew what a experience we were about to have”...............by Mia director

And the best part is that everything is so fresh and therefore healthy!

The tasting turned into a experience of party flavours, simple and sophisticated as mango or dry lemons garnish with spices brought from Thailand can be, all accompanied with a menu of fine international wine and desserts like the green tea warm pudding! and to top it all, the service was excellent! the tables are looked after by a team of waiters, all with one task to complete for every stage of the meal.

The restaurant comes with an innovative service, the owner Leon (who is from China) a connoisseur on the business as well as qualified sommelier, knows that Alicante is changing its culture with more and more international people coming to live here, hence the restaurant offering meals pretty much all day! one could star dining from 8pm rather that the usual 10pm! Which for us, expats is a blessing!
The restaurant also offers a series of cocktails and tapas served throughout the whole day at the lush bar or terrace with views to the Torregolf park.

All with the life house music play by the famous DJ Jonathan Lopez, a reality TV star from “ Casado a primera vista” (Marriage at first Sight), Jonathan welcomed us as if it were his house, the smile and care on us made us feel so at easy and comfortable to seat at the bar and later on the sassy chairs digging on the grounds. Make sure you get your picture taken with him!

The experience was so good that our director decided to repeat it with her kids the week after and they loved it, the chairs on the ground, the costumes and the exotic dishes didn’t scare them off and the noodles! Which kid does not like noodles!

Location is excellent as it is not in the centre of Alicante, plenty of parking and a park for the kids to play!

Any excuse for a Party? And it can’t be so much fun if you do it all the time?

The streets parties in Spain, dates from many many years ago, the whole community lives for it and it takes a year preparation to hold the event and save for the expenses, in many occasions not having any funding from the local government, other than private donations and the willingness of the neighbours to keep their traditions!

Los Girasoles, an upcoming suburb in Alicante, belonging to the City of San Vicente, so close to San Vicente famous University! Only about 15 minute drive from Playa San Juan and Alicante Airport! A quiet area where compounds don't exist, only big villas, with nice roads for cars and bikes, with country side lanes, some shops and a few restaurants. There is a central park where the party takes off! Unmissable by its location!

On the third week of August, Tables are laid around a ring where the stage and dance floor is, with room enough for professional dancing horses to perform and competitions for the whole family as well as fantastic music for all ages and styles. To get a table is not easy, you pretty much need to be local and pay about 60 euros for the week, reserving in advance! So every day for a week, you can bring along your own food, drinks and enjoy the activities with your family. The neighbors, the teens and the little ones will be there as well as the Girasoles Festival Queen and King!! So difficult to stay seated and so easy to see three generations at once in the Dance Floor!

This year MIA Property Boutique had the pleasure to be invited! By our Sister Company manager, Jose Antonio de Inmobiliaria Aluna, what a great night! We meet his lovely wife, beautiful daughter, friends and friends of friends! Lots of Food, drinks, Dance, Bingo and Bouncy castles! We wanted to stay over for the foam party next day but our English clock took us to bed after 3am!!

Here are some pictures and a little video to give you a flash of the event! And this is what is like to live in los Girasoles! Here to buy a house is not just the house but the Community! So much forgotten nowadays!

We all know that it’s important to look your best for a job interview – a tailored suit makes a much better impression than faded jeans and a wrinkled t-shirt. More recently, the presentation principle has stretched into real estate, where buyers expect to see a home in model condition. Staging has become status quo for home sales, with professional stagers refurbishing and refurnishing homes so that they can be shown in their best light. In this post, we’ll look at how this new sales strategy has affected the real estate market.

In a 2015 survey, the National Association of Realtors found that a majority of realtors believe that home staging is extremely effective in promoting sales. Most realtors also believe that staging a home raises the final price by up to ten percent, which makes staging a worthwhile investment at a cost of less than seven hundred dollars on average. Staging can certainly cost more – some staging companies charge as much as $100,000 – but most offer much more less expensive service menus. Another cost-cutting measure is to stage only one room, such as the living room, for maximum impact at minimal outlay.

In addition to increased sales and higher asking prices, staging has also affected buyer assumptions. Now that staging is so common, and popularized by how-to and househunting shows on HGTV, buyers expect to see a staged home, repainted and redecorated. Many realtors who responded to the NAR survey reported that staging allowed clients to see each home as a “clean slate,” rather than a lived-in dwelling, and that it was much easier for them to envision themselves in the new place.

The trend towards staging has created a thriving industry for decorators who have reinvented themselves as home stagers, specializing in upscale properties or a certain “look.” Since every house on the market competes with homes that have been staged for sale, homeowners and real estate agents are extremely motivated to hire professional help.

Home staging has also had a transformative effect on internet real estate sales. Now that most clients start their purchase journey online, staging has become a crucial tool for catching their interest. Prospective clients may look at photos of hundreds of properties before making contact with a realtor or agency, and they may look at a property listing for only a few seconds before clicking through or clicking away. Now that virtual tours and other multimedia displays are common features on real estate websites, staging has become crucial to displaying a home to best advantage.

Professional staging incorporates extra cost and effort into the process of selling a home – but it also has a dynamic effect on home sales. Staging offers property owners a sure way to increase the value of their property, and it allows realtors to list and sell properties more quickly and with added flexibility. Like the classic blazer-and-tie combo, staging techniques add polish and excitement to a new prospect!

No matter the economic recessions or water draughts, the Hogueras is a must! and the Alicantinos ensure this happens with so much passion that it is not difficult to get involved! If you live by the city, be prepared to have sleepless nights by the parades and barracas at your door! With fireworks displays and explosions everywhere! And what are “Las Barracas”?

Well they are improvise street restaurants and bars, full of delicious smells, drinks and music! At excellent prices! The Hogueras sculptures built from paper mache following themes imposed by the ayuntamiento, all have a message to give, many times related to politics, every district, main street will have one, they can be as tall as a building and they all compete for a prize! They are set on fire set on the 24th June at 12 pm, right after a massive firework display with the shape of a palm tree jumping off the castle! With chants and provocations to the fire men, the spectators will get a good water splash! Make sure you bring clothes to get changed!

A great excuse to stay with the family, get close to your friends and drop all the stress of working or studying!....maybe that’s the trick to have a happy long life!

In April, after Easter the Alicantinos do a Romeria, one of the nicest ones in Spain, after the one in Sevilla. This Romeria (peregrination) which is about 8 km long gathers about 20,000 pilgirms! starts at The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas which is in the city center, old part and ends in San Juan Playa, at La Santa Faz Monastery, where the original Canvas of Jesus Christ face rest (for those who don’t know, the canvas is a piece of cloth used to clean Jesus Christ when he was walking with the cross on his shoulder before been crucified).

The Santa Faz Romeria, has been performed since the last three centuries, and is undertaken by all ages & backgrounds, even children and pets are involved! While the early walkers enjoy the ceremony along with traditional biscuits and sweet wine, the late ones, (mostly youngsters), start their parade towards what is known here as “El Botellon” “Party in the Street”, which ends at the end of the romeria, taking course to playa San Juan, where drinks, music and food will be brought in shopping trolleys taken from the supermarkets, amazingly there are no casualties involved other than lots of drunk teens on the beach, there are no fights and the next day everything is again clean and pristine like if nothing even happened!

How much does it cost? It’s free! may bring along a picnic and stop at any time!, it's totally safe and fun for the kids! They can bring their bikes, roller blades or prams, there is no restriction! ….and something is for sure ..your little one will remember this events for the rest of his or her life and may bring them back every time in April with your grand kids along!
